When a platform is created where everyone can participate without much monitoring and rules, critics and fans are equally expected. However, it is now common to see trolls overpowering the comment section and leaves no opportunity to unnecessarily defame, degrade and discourage the posts and posters online. How best in your opinion, can this matter be controlled or avoided? Is trolling on the rise because its easy to sit behind the screen and write whatever one wants to? Are people becoming judgmental or is it that hatred has increased in the world?

Trolling has been around since the very essence of online communities. It's not just on social media. I wouldn't necessary say it's on the rise. It's something that has always been here.

I have found that trolling on social media tends to happen a lot, and those who participate in the trolling usually feel that, because it is on the internet, they can not be punished for anything they say or do.

A lot of trolling I find seems to come from those who have an opinion and no one else's opinion if different is right.

You're right online anonymity often fuels boldness without accountability.
Tighter moderation tools and promoting digital empathy can help to curb this trend.
Its a mix of growing judgement, unchecked platforms and projecting their own issues

I don't seem to understand the reason why people would troll other people on social media. I always call them keyboard warriors. They always want to bully others online into submission. Anyone that is a troll on social media, I personally don't rate such a person.

You are right, my friend. Indeed, in my opinion, there should be supervision by a specialized administration to follow up on this and prevent it in various ways

it's common especially towards kids
Kids aren't supposed to be allowed on social media platforms to begin with. It's against coppa laws and regulations. Which is why, the government is introducing Coppa 2.0. If they are on social media platforms, they are doing it without their parent's permissions, especially under the age of 13.

Today, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) and the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) to better protect children and teens online. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, twice led the passage of the bills through the Committee, and worked tirelessly with bill sponsors, stakeholders and parents whose children were harmed, to build consensus and support necessary to secure Senate approval.

“Americans, including kids, are being tracked across the internet and every place they go with a phone or mobile device,” said Sen. Cantwell. “Social media companies are harvesting our children’s personal data and making billions of dollars a year through targeted ads aimed at them. Taken together, COPPA 2.0 and KOSA will give parents new tools to protect their kids online, hold social media companies accountable for harm, require consent before data can be collected and ban targeted advertising to kids under 17.

Sen. Cantwell led the successful passage of COPPA 2.0 and KOSA through the Senate Commerce Committee on July 27, 2022, and again on July 27, 2023. She met several times with families whose children were harmed and worked continuously to strengthen support for the legislation in the Senate.

The Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) bans online companies from collecting personal information from users under 17 years old without their consent. It bans targeted advertising to children and teens and creates an eraser button for parents and kids to eliminate personal information online. The bill also establishes a Youth Marketing and Privacy Division at the FTC. In February, Sen. Cantwell joined as a bill cosponsor.

What exactly does this do, though?

"I am over 18 years old."

How do they know that they are under 13 to begin with? Do politicians really think kids under 13, after knowing that they'll be banned, will be able to avoid this?

It just gives parents a false sense of security that their kids will be safe with a device, only reinforcing soft parenting as the "government will be there to help". Furthermore, it makes kids better at being able to hide what they're doing when they learn the repercussions of telling the truth (i.e., an age-restriction ban), maybe seeping into other aspects of their life in that they learn how to lie and hide stuff better.

Worthless piece of legislation that took floor time to pass with no real change.

There's AI systems in place now that'll check if the kids are actually using the right age. I bet other social media sites will soon roll them out.
Commenting on this, Meta wrote:

“We’ve been using artificial intelligence to determine age for some time, but leveraging it in this way is a big change. We’re taking steps to ensure our technology is accurate and that we are correctly placing teens we identify into protective, age-appropriate settings, but in case we make a mistake, we’re giving people the option to change their settings.”

I don't believe their system is perfect, and can never be perfect. Some kids don't act their age, and there are even adults, some without disabilities, per se, who have a child mindset.

But, this legislation isn't for Meta: It's to stifle competition. If a site is unable to determine age, like Meta can, they require Meta verification, or to amp up their verification process, both of which are barriers to entry, as both come with an additional cost, with the risk as forcefully being shut down with fines as they will be unable to comply.

I don't think so either, which is an issue that'll forever exist on the internet. It's up to the admins and staff on the sites to control these problems before they take effect.

It's a global problem, but without using reporting those issues, it won't be addressed properly. Which is why most of them get out of hand. It's currently happening with Roblox as well.

Some Facebook groups are full of bullies, just like similar forums were like that before Facebook groups.
The forums that I belonged to were quite professional, and the staff kept it that way by keeping everyone civil.

What type of forums did you belong to where that attitude towards other members was alright?

Some people just go online just to troll others. They just make comments full of hatred disdain for others all in the name of social media activism. I don't know how faceless social media is that government can't tackle the problem of cyber bullying on social media and bring culprits to book.
