discuss Would people significantly help the poor and needy, if the government did not?

This thread covers all aspects of ideologies, including beliefs, principles, traditions, policies, and their influence on society and culture.
There are many people that I see that already do step up and need help but you always get some who refuse completely to help those in need and their reason for it is, charity starts at home, and I hear that a lot.

If the government did stop helping the needy, I feel some would still help but after a while, that may stop too as there is only so much someone can do before it starts affecting them.

I haven't heard any right-wing responses to this. Well, I saw one good case of private individuals helping during Hurricane Helene (The Cajun Navy), but generally it seems like churches only put out food boxes in front of their churches in many places.

And it's interesting to note that welfare didn't exist in Roman times, so the church did step to the plate and that's a big reason why it grew in those days.

It is virtually impossible to cater for all the needy people put together to be supported by the government or even private people for their daily needs for life. The best that both the government and the private sector can do is offer jobs and education to such people which will empower them with skills to become self-sustainable. India has progressed tremendously in this matter over the past 3 decades, but there is still a vast gap that needs to be filled. Hopefully, more kinds hearts and hands will keep contributing towards the betterment of society in general.

If the government didn’t help the poor and needy, some individuals, charities, and communities would step up but not at the same scale or consistency. While many people are compassionate, government systems provide structured, large-scale support that individual efforts alone likely couldn’t replace in full.
