discuss What's the least RAM you can use?

A thread covering the latest news on trends, groundbreaking technologies, and digital innovations reshaping the tech landscape.
I have 16 GB of memory on my laptop, so it'll be quite a while before I run out of memory (I have Photoshop to Lightroom to Aftereffects to Chrome with 28 currently active tabs open now with 5 GB memory to spare).

On my servers, that's a different thing. I try to keep the most minimalist settings possible for CPU power, RAM, and storage. I know that I can attach another drive to my instance, which is cheaper than bringing up a larger storage drive in the first place, or use Object Storage instead, so I don't elect to get a lot of storage first. However, there's no way around selecting a permanent setting of 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB ... RAM for the instance.

As Elasticsearch 8 (which allows for auto-complete for searches on XenForo) requires 4 GB RAM, there's no way around that. However, you can elect to use Elasticsearch 7 which doesn't have this limitation on 2 GB RAM, and allocate 1 GB RAM to the system and 1 GB RAM to Elasticsearch. Why pay $30 more for a system that can support it when you can just optimize what you have to make it work?

I guess the minimum requirement needed to achieve smooth phone performance is 6GB of RAM. A mobile phone will operates slowly when memory capacity drops below this level.
If you have lots of apps and files taking up the RAM space, the phone will work fine without any lagging. It's why I don't leave any unnecessary apps which I'm not making use of in my phone more than 48 hours.
