Recently, I cam across a post on this forum where a user talked about being emotionally mature. This got me thinking what exactly is emotional maturity? Is suppressing emotions emotional maturity? How do we became emotionally mature?
Emotional maturity is the ability to control your emotions when you know that it would bring negative effects on others. Someone in your team talks down on you and you are expected to flare up because your are angry. But you hold yourself back. You know getting angry would disrupt the entire team task. That is emotional maturity.
I believe emotional maturity means you are able to control your emotions. You don't make emotional judgement, and you don't have emotional meltdown. It also means you are able to control your thoughts even when you are in extreme grief.
I see emotional maturity as managing emotions effectively, like staying calm during a heated work discussion, and taking responsibility for actions, such as apologizing sincerely over coffee after a misunderstanding.
