Can we finally be looking at peace in Ukraine? Zelenskyy has agreed to a ceasefire over in Saudi Arabia in the last few hours. This now needs to be taken to Putin to see if he is going to agree.

At least it will stop the killings and give them some time to negotiate a more long term peace deal.

Do you think peace will hold? Zelenskyy has said that Putin cannot be trusted. I'm inclined to agree with him. But it's a start, at least. The issue is going to be that Ukraine will demand all their occupied land back. Russia will demand to keep that territory. Interesting times.

Yes! This is exactly what I have been anticipating. I actually envision that a ceasefire will be initiated and I'm glad that Ukraine has welcomed that step. The issue over occupied territory is indeed a major obstacle to the peace of that region. I do hope that Putin would also follow suit for peace to reign.

Nobody would have thought that Russia and Ukraine would fight against each other.
Nobody? Russia has a long history of belligerence, particularly toward its neighbours. The 2008 invasion of Georgia, the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the ongoing involvement in eastern Ukraine since then, and even its intervention in Moldova’s Transnistria region in the 1990s all point to a pattern. The idea that Russia and Ukraine could come into open conflict wasn’t unthinkable, it was foreshadowed by years of aggression and expansionism.

As much as it is is great that a 30-day ceasefire is ready to go and Ukraine are in agreement with it, I have a feeling that Russia are going to make this difficult and it seems they already are.

Russia do not have a good track record when it comes to ceasefires or keeping up with agreements so I would be surprised if this ceasefire goes through and stays for the 30 days if Russia do decide to agree to it.

And this is Zelenskyy's issue. He says Russia cannot be trusted. At the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was in possession of a stockpile of Soviet nukes. They gave them up on the promise that their integrity would be respected. The Crimean annexation in 2014 put paid to that belief. Putin cannot be trusted. Zelenskyy knows that.

Putin has also demanded that Ukraine disarms. If you had been the victim of an invasion by a militarily superior nation, would you be willing to give up your guns?
