I remember watching few matches in which there were incidences when a player puts the ball in his own net and shocks and disappoints his fans. This may be forgotten by fans over the years, however, this may stay as guilt in the player's mind for the rest of his life. How guilty would you be, if you were in his shoes?

I really don't want to imagine what goes through a player's head realizing that they just put the ball into their own net. It might not be really mentally damaging for the player If they are leading with up to two goals, or even one goal after the own goal. The trauma of your own goal putting your team in a draw or lose position is something that I don't think I can stand.

I watched a match where someone scored an own goal. It was very frustrating and the way the fans reacted was so harsh. I think no one is above making such a mistake even professionals like Harry Maguire know this feeling too.😂 He’s good at scoring own goals😂
You people should leave my Maguire alone. At least, he scored in the opponent's net against Lyon.

But if I were a coach, and a player in my team scores an own goal, and I have the depth, I won't play such a player for like two subsequent games especially if he is a defender. That's to help him recover mentally from such an incident. It can be a real setback for a player.

What I have seen with modern footballers is that they are momentarily demoralized when they score an own goal. But it seems some consciousness tells them that they can't roll over and die. That's why they would get back to see if they can redeem themselves and help the team win. I rarely see players that score own goals being subbed off immediately after. They always keep on playing which means the coach expects them to overcome that setback.

Harry Maguire has gotten better to the point where he can score very good goals at the rival end now. I like how he did very good to be better than before.

I would feel very guilty, but its ultimately part of the game.

As a player - will I be mad? Yes, if it gives my opponent a lead over it. And NO, if it has no effect on the tally of goals. However,

However, imagine if I am playing the World Cup, then I would be forever guilty.
You can imagine how terrible you would feel for the rest of your lifetime if you score a own goal in a world cup semi final or final that caused your team to lose. I am mentally strong but that one would always break me.

I totall agree. It also comes with the stakes behind it.

The larger your stakes are, the larger is your guilt.

Harry Maguire's redemption arce playing for Manchester United needs to be studied and even have a documentary made about it because the player went through a lot.
