discuss Technology's Effect on Adolescents.

A thread covering the latest news on trends, groundbreaking technologies, and digital innovations reshaping the tech landscape.
While my daughter is still quite intelligent, I noticed a change in her attention span from the time I got her a smartphone to now. Having a phone seems to have impacted her short-term memory or attention span where she will forget the simplest instructions. However, it could also just be the addictive power of social media that draws her in, and she didn't really forget, she just didn't make the time to do it because she finds her phone more important.

I had to put a screen timer on and set certain apps to only be used for a set period despite her overall screen time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. In other words, she can use TikTok for 30 minutes, but still have 2 hours to spare doing other things on her smartphone. This seemed to have helped a little as she knows she can't use the "most addictive" apps for the longest time.

Having screen time set and apps limited to stricter use also gives her an incentive to do what she needs to get done. This is because when she's done with everything, I can easily bump the screen time of the phone or app that she wants to use, or, suggest that she start a book instead.

The modern age brings both positive and negative impact on teenagers when it comes to technology. It gives them continuous access to educational resources, social connections to relatives and friends. But an improper amount of screen time creates conditions which can result in addiction and reduction in their attention span. It makes them lose focus on more important things if not used in moderation.

Anything that is abused on how it is used always turns to have a negative effect on the person that uses it. It's the same thing with how the use of technology affects those who are abusing how they are using it.

It is how human communication and relationship have been rendered useless because of how people are now more addicted to their phones and use of this social media platforms instead of establishing direct human connection and interpersonal relationship.

It is almost impossible these days to bar kids from using technology. We know technology can improve their academic performance but how many of them use it to better their performance? Parents must properly monitor theiir children's exposure to gadgets using parental controls. Too much screen time has adverse effects on the development of children. Apart from setting the maximum screen time per week, devices must be barred at certain times. In addition, activities that do not require screen usage can organised from time to time.

I didn't make use of a smartphone until I entered my first year in the university. But today, kids makes use of smartphone and tablets when they are still in primary school. This is something that is never possible during my time as a kid.

I can relate to this. My child could speak fluent English (his second language) before he started his formal education because we let him watch educational content on TV. But as he grew older, he could operate TV or use smartphone himself and then he started watching all sorts of content. Now, he does not pay much attention to educational content, he is not interested in "learning."

This is why parental control is very important with what kids are allowed to consume online in form on contents. So many contents online do more damage than help the kids. Till date, I will be grateful to my parents for not allowing me a smartphone until I entered into the University.
