Meta has acquired Play AI, a voice technology startup focused on AI-generated human-like voices, in a move the company says will bolster its conversational AI platforms. The Play AI team is set to join Meta’s AI division within the next week, with the aim of integrating advanced voice capabilities into Meta’s suite of AI-driven products.

Details of the Acquisition​

Meta confirmed the acquisition of Play AI, a California-based startup offering AI voice cloning tools capable of generating and replicating natural-sounding voices for use in websites, apps, and phones. While the financial terms were not disclosed, Meta stated that the entire Play AI team will join its expanding AI division and report directly to Johan Schalkwyk, a prominent speech AI leader and recent Meta hire. Schalkwyk previously oversaw speech research at Google and led another voice startup, Sesame AI.12

Strategic Importance for Meta​

This acquisition aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to invest in conversational AI and expand its technological infrastructure. The company has earmarked up to $65 billion in capital expenditures for AI infrastructure in 2025 and has consolidated its AI research under Meta Superintelligence Labs, led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI. Play AI’s technology is considered a strong fit for Meta’s vision of embedding advanced voice features across products like Meta AI, AI Characters, and wearable devices.12

Integration Into Meta’s AI Ecosystem​

Play AI’s expertise in lifelike, natural-sounding voice generation will support existing Meta initiatives. According to internal sources, the Play AI team’s work will help drive development in audio tools, voice-integrated products, and creative applications for users and developers. Meta is really moving strategically. As a layman, i just hope all this AI stuff will be used positively. I used to be scared of it once, but now I'm trying trying to understand it more and I'm calmer.
