Have you ever had a rough night or a few nights of rough sleep?

Insomnia.

I remember having it before. I just can't sleep. Sometimes for days but when I finally do get some sleep, I'm usually out.

I eventually quit getting insomnia when I started working out more, quit smoking and drinking, started eating better, and started going to bed at a good time.

But some forms of insomnia don't work that way.

Fatal Familia Insomnia (FFI) is a type of insomnia that prevents sleep to a point to where you start to hallucinate, develop dementia, have organ failures, and death is always the end result. It can happen in as little as a couple of weeks.

Many years ago, I learned about some siblings in Australia whose parents died of FFI. I knew they were both very active and did what they could to try to prevent it, but you can inherit it. I was hoping they'd never get it, but it looks like in 2023, one sibling started showing signs of it. I'm not sure if that sibling is still alive or not.

Have any of you heard of FFI before? Do you know anyone diagnosed with it or who has perished because of it?
