MTV made this popular with Van Life. However, those who fell into the lifestyle quickly learned that it wasn't all cut out to be.
For starters, a house on wheels costs much more than you realize. Sure, you can get a van for $10,000, but to retrofit it is going to cost you another $30,000-50,000, or more, for a nice setup that allows you to do all you need without being on the grid for too long. So, now you have a $50,000+ depreciating asset when you could've put (a little more now) down on a house, and have grown equity along the way, along with a fixer-upper car that got you to and from work to pay the bills, as you'd likely be hours away from work.
The other problem that people faced was that they found out you can't just park in any parking lot for the night and not expect to be awoken by either the property manager telling you to get out of the parking lot or the surroundings where you'd want or need to move.
