Gigapedia was the world's biggest library of digital books. You could find any books you wanted, including the recent titles. However, it was shut down in 2012 through a court order. Later, it was run through another domain library.nu, which was also shut down. As a student, I found this site very useful. I saved a lot of money by downloading my course books. Did you ever use Gigapedia?

I've never actually heard of this website. I've always thought how great it would be to have a freely fully accessible library of online books available somewhere, but obviously always thought there would be issues with licensing and fee arrangements which is what sounds like happened in this case with the matter ending up in court.

Some local councils here in the UK are now bringing out digital library services for their local residents, so maybe it's coming.

I remembered using Gigapedia back in day. It was perfect for searching digital books. This is where I also downloaded many books. I was sad when it shut down. This site was very helpful for many students.
While using Gigapedia did it ever occur to your mind that you are dishonoring the authors of these books. Did you ever think that you are undermining the role of the author by downloading books for free and the author not benefiting anything?

I am not aware of Gigapedia or it's second domain but it sounds good. These sort of websites can help us save money and download free books.

This is my first time ever hearing about Gigapedia. Was it related to wikipedia in anyway?
No, not in any way related to wikipedia. Gigapedia was a free ebook site. You can download almost any books, even the recent releases. The site was forced shut down because of "Violating copyrights"

Never heard of this site and I browsed countless hours for the right edition of college textbooks. I mean, in the official school library, where I purchased them for the courses I was enrolled in. 😏
If only you had Gigapedia back then, it might have helped you out. I have used it and it has diverse stock, the eBooks are very useful. There were other means which you could get your required textbooks, or was it difficult all through your course of study?

It just took time.

Sometimes you could only find the previous edition though. The class, for instance, would require the 5th edition, but you could easily find the 3rd or 4th.

Textbooks are a scam.

I typically found from 2-3 editions apart, they were exactly the same text (Ed. 3 and 4 would be the same as 5). The only difference was that they moved pages and chapters, and sometimes renamed sections and headings, which made it difficult, but not impossible, to follow along with the edition used in the course.

No worries, Gigapedia is not the platform it used to be known for But it was a virtual library that offered information in form of e-books, articles, and other related material. It is not directly related to Wikipedia yet it provide a huge number of educational materials as well. However, it’s sad that Gigapedia is no longer in existence.
