Cold War was a period when the USSR and the US had a bad relation (1947-1991. In recent times, we can see tensions over trade, technology, and Taiwan have heightened US-China rivalry. Some fear an economic or military standoff, while others believe cooperation is still possible. Should both countries de-escalate, or is strategic competition inevitable?

For as long as China has a land dispute with Taiwan, I don't think there is any room to de-escalate things. I believe that will need to be settled before we can move on to another chapter. And, settling that will either be peaceful or not, driving us into real war if it can't.

If not for the backing Taiwan is getting from USA, China would have invaded them by now like Russia did with Ukraine. It's a very delicate situation for them.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. But, if Xi wants it back while he's in power for his legacy, it's going to have to make a move and not a strategic wait-it-out-and-destroy-it-from-within type of move.

I dont really want them to finish their fight.

When US and China competes, there is a lot of innovation coming out of it. Additionally, many small countries that are developing can take advantage of the shift of geopolitical forces.

For example, when US decided to choke China of processing power, we now have ChatGPT and DeepSake.

No.

They can be at peace at some point if they work together, but they'll always be at a cold war with one another.

In America, we want to be the best and the world's superpower. In China, they want to be the best and the world's superpower. Neither of us wants to share. Neither of us is in the wrong either, IMO.

Of course China wants to rule the world, as do we (America). That's how that works.

I do hope we don't have a hot war against each other because it will likely result in a nuclear exchange. The world will be a much different place after that. But we will always have a cold war.

China has stated unofficially that it wants Chinese domination on the scale of the US domination in the 2000s. It believes that China's rightful world role is domination because it had been the sole major power in the past. This is very scary and has to challenged. Well, if China dominates AI, it could very well force all the world to bow down.

It might be scary, but I can't blame them and feel like they're bad for doing it.

Because that's what America is doing, nor do I blame America.

I don't agree with how China runs its country. I'm anti-communist. But at the end of the day, they want what we want, and who are we to tell another country they can't be what we are?

So, we all just have to keep competing while also trying to keep the peace and not exchange nukes.

It's not about Communism. The chi-coms simply want China dominating the world because they're China.

But that's exactly what we want, too.

I'm sure North Korea wants that.

We know Russia really wants that.

Who doesn't want that? The country that dominates will be the country that will likely prosper the most.

It's not one country is more evil than the other, it's competition and that's it.

Who's going to be tough enough to compete?

Honestly, the West should leave Asia and the West Pacific alone. Let Japan or Indonesia deal with it. All this he-man Crusader stuff isn't wise.

Currently, it looks like there will be something like cold war for at least 4 years. :D There has been exchange of bitterness related to tariff. Well, the US can certainly impose tariff, but other countries can do the same thing. I do not like how China is run but it is also true that they never invaded any country except India and Tibet. With Taiwan that separated with the mainland in 1949 they have been showing restrains for a long time. China is expansionist that is for sure, they drove away Tibetans from their home, but they are rapidly growing, in terms of economy.

We just need to make sure we don't lose allies. One day, we may regret that.

Sure, I'm all for not going into debt to be the first responder of the world but I'm not for losing important allies.

Japan can be more than an ally, but they would need to rearm, and the US won't let it be a grown-up.

But honestly, culture needs to be taken into consideration, so South Korea, "an unofficial" enemy of Japan needs to rearm also at the same level.

Considering what they did in the Pacific in the past and how many American lives were lost trying to defend and stop it, should we?

There were 2,403 Americans killed in Pearl Harbor by Japan's attack. Afterward, America lost another 325,000-350,000 island-hopping to put out the fire of Japan (you could add in another million if we didn't use the atomic bomb). The direct effect of Japan, like on Korea, and its ripple effects of the war on other nations resulted in 12 to 16 million civilian losses.

Sure, we can let bygons be bygons, but blood stained every island and almost every nation in the East Pacific because of Imperial Japan. Because of that, I think it's safe to say we should only let Japan be a defensive nation, but only extend it to go beyond if directly attacked, and on the side or with the support of America.

America has a strong presence there. Enough to make up for it.

However, both Japan and South Korea should start paying more of their fair share for protection and weaponry.

What your saying is that the West is morally superior. Isn't that condescending and arrogant, and even if what you said is true, is that the case now and into the future? I mean, even the US culture now is way different even from the 1950s.

Anyway, how can we possibly police the world for all eternity, from a practical view, regardless of how Northeast Asians behave?

And, finally, China can never be controlled because of its huge army, nuclear arsenal and superpower status.
