discuss Bad things should not be said about the dead. Why?

This thread covers all aspects of ideologies, including beliefs, principles, traditions, policies, and their influence on society and culture.
Even in Western culture, there is a thing that says one should not speak ill of the dead. I don't care. If I didn't like a person when they lived, I'm unlikely to like them now. What has the person's death to do with it? I'd rather be honest than start saying nice things about them because I'd just be a hypocrite.

A man married my aunt, and was repeatedly sleeping with the teenage helps they brought to assist them with chores at home. That aside, he always beat the woman. Didn't bother about the kids he had. The wife bore all financial responsibility for the kids alone. And if that was not enough, he sold the wife's car without the wife's knowledge and didn't remit a penny to the wife. He just died. Are the wife and the kids supposed to say that he was a good man or they should just not say anything about him because he is now dead?

You can't expect everyone to be nice at your funeral, but more people will be nice, if you were a nice person.
If one was actually a nice person, 99% of persons would have a good thing to say about the person at his funeral. But if more than 20% of persons in a funeral are just indifferent if asked for their opinions about the deceased, the person was actually a very terrible person.

In some cultures, people are criticized for saying bad things about a dead person. If you can't find any good thing to say about a dead person, they expect you to keep quiet regarding them.

Why is it frowned at to say bad things about the dead?! What if the person was truly bad?
It all depends on the nature of the person, but still, I don't speak about the dead. Especially since they're not around anymore. I think it's wrong to do so.

However, I do understand the perspective of discussing them if they were a bad person, but I wouldn't do it.
