off-topic Are You Epicurean?

For threads discussing subjects unrelated to the main forum topics.
I consider myself a bit of an amateur chef. I enjoy cooking for the family or for friends when we have them over. I love trying new things. I love food and I'm a bit of a wine snob.

I am epicurean by nature, what about you?

Aren't we all epicurean by nature of being human? We all eat, we all drink.

Eating and drinking for survival and actually enjoying food and drink are two different things, right? Well, I know a lot of people who eat just because they are hungry, there is no enjoyment in their eating habit. :D

I used to eat and drink for the enjoyment of things. But then, I was rushed to finish my meals because that is time away from the job that could get someone harmed.

Even though I came from a pre-cook background and enjoyed sitting down and eating a nice burger or steak that I helped prepare.

Today? You put a plate in front of me, and it's all just one ingredient: Done in 5 minutes or under. I just can't shake the habit of eating fast.

This is a wider symptom of the instant-gratification we see in the world now. We (collective 'we') favour immediate satisfaction over curated experiences. I do truly fear the world that my children and grandchildren will inherit. There is less beauty in the world if we don't take our time to appreciate experiences.

It's not for the instant gratification of eating, it's because I could never shake the habit after leaving the military where we were forced to eat in under 2 minutes, sometimes as little as 30 seconds if we did something bad prior.

Even after initial training, I still couldn't shake it and enjoy my food; I would still devour it, as I do to this day.

If my cause of death will be anything, it'll probably be from choking in old age as I won't be able to salivate. 😅

Those habits are hard to shake! There is a great scene in The Butterfly Effect where Treborn (Ashton Kutcher) guards his food in the diner, due to PTSD from being in prison, even though he hadn't been to prison during that current timeline.

I am very lucky in that food has always been made to be a pleasurable experience for me. I took over the family business from my Dad. We have always been into food - both preparing and consuming.

The funny thing is, I was a prep-cook before the military and a cook in the military. But, as a prep-cook, unlike the line cooks or chefs, you don't get time to eat either. And, the only time you have to eat in the military is when the food is served to everyone, which still leaves you little time, as you have to immediately get to making the kitchen spotless (not a speck of dirt on anything).

So, if I went into another career path in the military, it might've been something I could've shaken.

Well, Thanks for sharing and explaining this new word. I am a foodie and enjoy the refreshing non alcoholic beverages. And the idea of merry making differs from person to person. But I enjoy to have fun travelling and meeting new people. I enjoy to host parties and get togethers for my closed friends from time to time. Though not a social butterfly as such or a party animal, I enjoy my time having fun in my own way. So, yes! I am epicurean.

Found a short that explains me.
