I suppose it’s a mix of both. The rhythm can make me listen to the song, but the lyrics are the reason I eventually find myself listening to it on the regular. This is why if the lyrics of the song speaks to me in some manner, then I appreciate the music even more. But if the beat is lacking, one cannot even listen to the song regardless of how well written the lyrics might be.

No matter how good the lyrics of a song is, it is a good beat that gives life to the lyrics. A song with a bad lyrics and good beat can be a hit. But a song with a terrible beat can never be a hit song.

Song 2 by Blur (there is no song 1 lol), is a fairly popular song, but the lyrics were made to make no sense, yet it still blew up. So I'd say beat is important than lyrics.

I believe the beats of a music creates the melody for the lyrics to be interesting. It is easier for a shallow lyrics music with a good beat to become popular than vice versa. The beat is more important in music. If a song has both good beats and lyrics, it is a big plus.
