Can AI really be a creativity enhancing tool in enhancing the processes of filmmaking or only a threat to authenticity? In my opinion, AI can prove to be a very good thing for indie filmmakers when it comes to editing, or visual effects, and so on. But what about the risk of the soullessness or lack of emotions in content generated by AI?

AI can be a great tool for filmmakers but it should not be used to replace human work, rather complement it. For example, using AI to analyze a script could provide suggestions for new scenes or plot twists. That's how to use it to complement human work because when it comes to the story itself, human intuition and emotional depth are essential.

The potential for AI in film making is unlimited. However, to me, I think that it is a threat to authenticity.

For example, we know that graphics done by a human, despite it flaws and glitches is very much real and natural. AI generated graphics are full of flaws, lifeless and terrible in the presentations.

For this very reason, I would use AI cautiously.

I think AI in filmmaking can be both a creative tool and a potential threat to authenticity, depending on how it's used. As a creative tool, AI can enhance visual effects, streamline production, and even assist in scriptwriting. It offers new possibilities for storytelling and design. However, if over-relied upon, it could undermine the human element of filmmaking.

This "AI IS BAD" argument is pretty pathetic. It is used widely in cinema, especially in VFX/SFX. Here's a couple of examples of the beautiful use of AI:

  • Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in The Irishman (2019) – AI-driven de-aging technology was used to make the actors appear decades younger.
  • Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) – AI was used to de-age Ford for flashback sequences.
  • Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – AI was used to digitally recreate Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin.
Don't be so quick to jump on the bandwagon of AI being a negative. Some of the most incredible technological advances in filmmaking are as a result of AI.
