This is something I've noticed within the past 10 years or so. Popular websites have the most minimal customizations that users can make, back in the day we could make our Myspace accounts look cool with custom css and html edits. Now you can only change your profile picture and cover photo. Then another thing I've noticed, logos for many popular brands used to look cool. For example the Mountain Dew logo used in the mid to late 00's looked cool, but then the abbreviated logo came out and it just looks boring. Back when I was growing up in the 90's and 00's, logos were hip and really drew customers in. Maybe I'm just wishing things were they way the used to be, but I can't be the only one who's noticed this right? Also on the topic of website customizations, even Reddit allowed mods to create their own themes just a decade ago and now on new Reddit all those cool themes are useless since you only see a boring light or dark theme.

Maye be because common people interacted better with simple logos and websites, and the business, products with simple logo converted well, people started giving more focus on simple logos and designs. When you design a logo or a create a website, it is not for you but for the people (your consumer), so you need to create what they like most.
