discuss What role does technology play in the evolution of sports ?

A thread for live match analysis, player performances, scores, highlights, fan predictions, and general sports discussions across all sports.
Technology has led to rapid changes and improvements in sports evaluation.

The best example is to watch olympics. There are laser machines that determines which athlete came first, what time they took along with a recording. This has reduced the discretion of human based referees and conflicts arising out of such misrepresentations.

I am more interested in technologies that are able to make sports more accessible to people. I think that the virtual and augmented reality offers possibilities to view sports differently, maybe even get a feel for them regardless our geographical location

You're right about how

revolutionizing how people engage with sports virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have significantly helped to make sports accessible to a lot of people especially those who are disabled. It wasn't easy like it is now years ago when VR and AR weren't advanced as they are now.

I'm not really into sports that much, but I watched some football in the 90s, a couple of games, and then again in the 2010s with the Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots Superbowl game while staying with some friends in the States.

I was amazed at how in the 90s, the referee would have to run down the line to mark the ball position. But, on live TV, you now see the live ball position as it's in the air and where it precisely touches in real time (does the flag ref still exist?). That leap in technology was pretty amazing to see, even though it's just GPS, or the sorts, tracking with real-time TV overlay, or something even simpler.

Come to find, they have communications in their helmets, I think. I could only see this becoming secondary to "Alexa". In that, Team A can feed the plays of the last 10 games of their rival Team B played through AI and it would be able to predict the movements of the player at go time, with "Alexa" giving each player assignments on how to counter the play that's being run. Heck, that already might exist on one team, but mums the word.
