Trust, honesty, loyalty, good communication, faithfulness and so many other things are what makes relationship work. Tolerance is important too because it's what will make it difficult to leave your partner when they don't do things right. You can tolerate their excesses.

I would say empathy and active listening are the needed tools for one's relationships. It is to understand the situation by putting oneself in the shoes of their partner. When this is carried out and questions are asked without interrupting, partners will feel safe. That makes the relationship stronger.
