The gaming landscape is gradually shifting from the traditional physical games to digital gaming. I read in a news article the number of gaming platforms that have dumped physical game production just to join the bandwagon of digital gaming..

Nintendo may probably be the next inline based on the rumors on the gaming platforms across social media. By implications, it means we can only get our games through downloads.

What do you make of this?

I don't like it because it takes ownership away.

They could pull the game at any time — probably in their ToS — and leave you with nothing. Or, they could remove a level or stage that you liked for whatever reason. And, the list goes on.

Whereas with a physical copy, you could pop it in and play it anytime.

I think it is not good for developer as they can pull your game and you might be at loss. But digital games are certainly good for players and they can immediately start playing.

I'm not a fan of this at all, once consoles phase out physical games I'm done with modern gaming and only going to worry about getting games for my favorite franchises, then play all my old games that I physically own. Plus physical copies look cooler and I love having them in my collection.

I hate this trend so much. No one owns anything anymore, and a game developer might decide to kill a server and your game with it.

So, you do not own a game but the permission to play it as long as the developer feels you should.

The Devs are shifting to digital games because of the convenience it offers as compared to the physical games. The physical games have their own perks too, but I think the digital games have made games accessible to so many people with just a click of a button.
Don't forget the profit margins. With a digital game, you only need to pay the hosting costs. With a digital copy, you need to pay for all the physical media you need.

And also, people are less likely to buy additional content when they buy physical compared to digital.
