Do you think walking should be considered as a sport?

I have seen many schools organising their annual sports meet with walking as a tournament, often with distances as long as 10 to 15km. Though it can be called an endurance activity, I am doubtful if it can be called as a sport.

What are your opinions?

There is walking and then there is brisk walking. Taking a stroll can in no-terms be considered as an exercise, however, brisk walking can be. For it to be a sport, it needs to have a competitive and challenging level and be an activity that not everyone can do easily. Brisk walking can be considered as a sport someday.

I don't see walking as a sport. It doesn't strain the body enough and doesn't have the intensity to be regarded as a sport. I know that walking is an exercise but it is not a sport.
Does an activity need to strain the body before it's considered as a sports? The answer is NO. An activity doesn’t need to strain the body to be considered a sport. Most sports are defined by physical exertion, skill, and competition in which their level of strain on the body is always different. For example, archery or golf require precision and skill and that doesn't physically strain the body but are widely recognized as sports.

I think it would be a great idea.

Walking is an activity that most people can take part it. It would a sport that isn't so discriminating. I would love to get involved in a sport like that.

There is a certain distance that you can cover and you will notice that your body is showing signs of being through it. If there is a chance that walking ends up being considered as a sport, I won't be mad about it.

This is true. A very good example is what you cover 12,000 steps in a day within the space of 6-8 hours. Your feet is going to be on fire.
