news Threads is finally embracing links

A thread covering the latest news on trends, groundbreaking technologies, and digital innovations reshaping the tech landscape.
you're active on Threads, you've probably noticed that posts with links don't do very well with the app's recommendation algorithm. This is especially noticeable if you're a publisher, creator or, yes, a journalist who depends on social media to share your work.

Threads' ambivalence to links isn't an accident. Instagram and Threads boss Adam Mosseri has confirmed that "we don’t place much value" on links, though the company doesn't intentionally downrank them. That may be starting to change, though. As Meta has made winning over creators a bigger priority for Threads, the company is now taking steps to make links a more prominent part of the service.

To start, the app will now allow users to add up to five links to their Threads bios. More importantly, Threads posts with links will now be surfaced more often in the app's recommendations. And Meta is adding link-specific insights to its built-in analytics tool so creators can track how often people are interacting with the content they share. "We want Threads to be a place that helps you grow your reach – even outside of Threads," Meta notes in a blog post.

Meta will show how many people are clicking on links you share on Threads.

While that will be welcome news for anyone hoping to turn their Threads account into a reliable traffic source, it's unclear just how dramatic of a shift users should expect. The app's algorithm is still a black box, even for power users. And Threads' emphasis on recommended posts means that even users with large numbers of followers tend to get more interactions from non-followers.

Publishers have also reported mixed results when it comes to Threads. Last year, several publishers reported that Bluesky, despite being far smaller than Threads or X, was a far more reliable traffic source than its larger counterparts. More recently though, some publishers have reported spikes in referral traffic from Threads following the company's reversal of a policy to not recommend political content. On the other hand, Meta's past is filled with numerous examples of whypublishers and creators shouldn't rely too heavily on the social network. Still, it may be a good time to at least start experimenting with more links on Threads.

I see that Threads posts are in my Facebook feed, but I don't want to be a member of Threads. However, to see the full post, Meta cuts off the top and bottom of the post, so if you click on it to expand, it forces you to sign up to see them. This behavior is different from Instagram posts in the Facebook feed, where you can still see the photos or videos.

It's quite annoying, to say the least. Either show me the full post in my Facebook feed or not at all.

Good ole gated content marketing strategies.

I think that scenario is how I came onto threads in the first place. I just had to see what the post was, LOL. But in all honesty, I'm starting to like it way more than X or Bluesky.

It's just another account to manage. 😑

If they're marketing it like Instagram, I can wait it out for the full content. 😄
Lmao. As long as you have an instagram account, you're just managing one account. But then again, if you also have a facebook account, it may be possible that they'll let you post on threads with it one day. 🤣

I know that they have a setting in instagram that enables you to autoshare to Facebook, which is why you see Threads on FB. They also have this setting from Instagram accounts too. They're a marketing genius tying all the platforms together.

I actually waited until Instagram was fully integrated with Facebook before getting an Instagram account because I saw the content was more in line with what I wanted on there than Facebook, i.e, people I know sharing things they're doing over random posts.

I figure it'll take the same path as soon as they reach the maximum potential of users and open it up to allow Facebook users to see the full Threads posts.

I have seen a couple of users complaining about Meta’s approach to links and cross platform posting. I think this is going to cause some kind of friction and Meta should address this very quickly.
What type of friction? Users that post links will now see more visibility on the platform. Prior to this update, users that posted links weren’t displayed a lot in other user’s feeds. This is a good move for people that advertise on the platform. You can also reap the benefits from threads by promoting your site’s content on there. It does build backlinks.

What type of friction?
I don't think friction is the best word to use, but maybe frustration? Meta has a way of allowing links to look like ordinary text or even links to keywords, groups, or pages, so it can be confusing to the older population and those after they reformat them, as they have recently with keywords having an eyeglass before them.

They need to work on 1 general format for links, so you know it's external and "links" that are internal for pages and groups.
