Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) gained prominence after George Floyd, an African American was killed by a white police officer in the US in 2020. In response, many government agencies and business organisations created the DEI programme to cater for underrepresented groups like black minority. In Hollywood, people have decried the underrepresentation of black actors and actors of colour. Films with actors from marginalised groups have often been underpromoted.
President Donald Trump, after assuming office in January 2025, asked the federal government to drop the DEI programme. He claimed the programme was discriminatory and counterproductive. Many organisations have also dropped their DEI policies. Should Hollywood abandon DEI?
