discuss Reboots and Remakes - Are There No Original Ideas Left?

Everything seems to be going through a reboot. I posted about plans to reboot Starship Troopers recently, and this is just one of many classic movies which have been highlighted for the reboot treatment.

So I wanted to ask, because it seems endemic right now, have Hollywood ran out of ideas?

Sometimes I think that its just a case of they know that an existing franchise already has an audience so it's a sure fire success. But that is a problem because there are already a group of people who will be pissed off if you get it wrong!

Do you think that reboots are lazy? Where are all the original ideas?

I do not think that Hollywood has run out of ideas. Remakes and reboots have as always been there long ago and it is just a way to bank on the existing franchise which could be a safe bet to maintain the loyal fans and reach out to the new ones.

I am not so sure that remakes and reboots are being used more because they are lacking ideas but more that there is an audience for remakes and reboots and they see money in that.

I will admit, it does seem as though we are seeing more reboots and remakes over any new content when it comes to movies but there have been some that have released or are due to be released that are not remakes or reboots. Two examples I have are M3GAN 2.0 which is releasing in June of 2025 and the other is Happy Gilmore 2, one I have been waiting a long time for

I also do not think that remake and reboot are a result of lack of ideas. My take is that oversaturation of remakes and reboots can reduce creativity and it could also make it so hard for new ideas to break through in the industry. Nevertheless there are still movies offering something new.

Reboots and remake rekindle the long forgotten emotions that fans had for a particular movie. It awakens nostalgia that draws the crowd to the theater and hence the cash for the makers. It is a faster and easier way to earn cash while working on a longer project based on a new idea.

They are doing it just for money. If you check the movies that are being rebooted or remade, you will see most of these movies were highly successful in their times. We rarely see flop movies being rebooted.

Reboots and remakes are popular because they’re familiar and safe bets for studios, but it can feel like original ideas are scarce. I think fresh storytelling still exists, just sometimes buried under commercial pressures.
