There are multiple plagiarism checkers online that offer free services initially, but after sometime force you to subscribe for the paid version. That is understandable considering that it is a business, however, there are platforms that offer what is free vs deep checkers, that is a bit hard to digest. Are they offering incomplete checking in free offers that might be refined in deep checker services? I am not clear of what the difference could be. Are you aware?

There's now plagiarism and AI detection on the market to help educators. Back when I was in school (2011-2016), we only had plagiarism detection through a service called Turnitin. It would compare my uploaded work to the works of others and peer reviewed journals to ensure that there wasn't duplicate work, and I believe, if it found something, that it was cited correctly.

Now, it appears that Turnitin also scans for AI. But, it has a plethora of student's papers from the pre-AI era to compare too as well as many institutions used it.

If you're looking to find AI content, I would say the free AI detection tools are just fine, as they're looking for keywords and phrases AI typically would lean towards using. If there's only 1 or 2 in the block of text, it might be human, but it shouldn't be a coincidence if there are 10 or more.

Though it really depends on what you're looking for when it comes to AI or plagiarism, to recommend using a free or paid version. If it's a quick detection and a one-off test, a free version wouldn't hurt. However, if your job is to hunt out AI or plagiarized work, like at university as a professor, you should be using more powerful tools so that you could, say, upload 50 students' papers and scan them at once.

The difference between free and paid plagiarism checker is like scanning the pages and actually reading the pages. When you scan, you cannot spot everything, when you read, you can spot even the minor details.

Plagiarism checkers work by comparing writer's work to previously published work that are stored in their database. This process check for similarities in terms of ideas and writing. When phrases or sentences are found to match existing text, then the work is highlighted as plagiarised. For plagiarism sites o effectively work, a large database is required.
