Michael "Newmie" Newman, the real-life lifeguard who starred in Baywatch for 10 seasons, has died at 67 following a battle with Parkinson's disease. He passed away Sunday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Newman, who joined Baywatch from its 1989 pilot and appeared in 109 episodes, was the only cast member who was an actual L.A. County lifeguard. Despite his TV fame, he continued working as a firefighter throughout his time on the show.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006, Newman remained physically active, hoping to slow the disease's progression. “All the plans I had… stopped,” he shared with People, reflecting on the impact of his diagnosis. In recent years, he participated in the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun.

Born in San Francisco in 1957 and raised in L.A., Newman was a competitive swimmer, Iron Man competitor, and a firefighter. He became a lifeguard in his youth, eventually finding his way to Baywatch thanks to series co-creator Greg Bonnan. He began as a stuntman before earning regular screen time.

Newman is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and granddaughter Charlie June. Donations in his memory can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

If you're a 90s kid, there's only one reason why you watched Baywatch, and it wasn't for him.

Though, that's pretty cool that they cast a real lifeguard in a Baywatch role. Having that expertise on set could've added authenticity to the scriptwriting, making scenes feel more authentic if needed. However, I'm unsure whether he played that kind of role in the production as nothing of the sort was mentioned. That's mere speculation on my part.

RIP
