discuss How Young is Too Young to Train

A thread for live match analysis, player performances, scores, highlights, fan predictions, and general sports discussions across all sports.
Inside China's sports factory (sorry, I could not come up with a better name), I have seen kids as young as 3 years being trained for various sports (through videos, of course). This seems sinister, right? How young is too young for training?
I have watched videos about Chinese kids being trained on different skills-physical, culinary, sewing, carpentry, etc. I think it is incorporated in their curriculum. There age specific trainings that young people can engage in.

Training programs targeting three-year-old children for formal training should not be allowed because it seems disgraceful to me. Winning takes precedence over child development in this situation. Children must experience childhood through playtime before discovering their interests without facing the stress of training at an intense level.

I would say that it's fine to train as young as three for any sport. That said, you need progressive overload. You couldn't just put one 3-year-old with another 4-year-old, with 1 year more of training, as permanent injury can occur.

Progressive overload is a training method that gradually increases the intensity of workouts to stimulate muscle growth and strength. It can be used for strength training and cardiovascular exercise.

If they're just running around and getting the fundamentals down, I don't see a problem with it.

It's not until you push them to the extreme, day-in-day-out, where things can go horribly wrong. An injury at that age could close a growth plate which would limit their fullest potential for life if that does happen.

A growth plate can close prematurely if injured, which means it stops producing new bone before a child has finished growing, potentially leading to a limb length discrepancy or bone deformity if not treated properly; this is often referred to as "growth arrest.".

There should also be social development balance with training too, as they could not develop socially in the way that their peers do if they're solely focused on taking home the gold and not mingling with kids their own age in classroom or other settings.

It depends on the sport you want to do, but I think that for most sports there is no specific age at which it is optimal to start, discounting for example bodybuilding, which I do not think that a child or adolescent should get involved in this sport until their body is fully developed.

Most definitely as bodybuilding, with the help of hormones, can cause irreversible harm.

It's a wonder that there's nothing wrong — that we know of, or can see externally as steroids can do a number internally — with Little Hercules.

However, he only grew to 5'8"-5'9", which might not've been his genetic maximum.

Today, it is much easier for parents to allow their kids to start training at the very young age but it's not something that was very much acceptable or allowed by our parents when we are kids during our time.

I think it's more of a thing about change or shift in culture that makes it possible for parents to allow their kids train at younger age.
