Liam Payne, a former member of boyband One Direction, has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, according to police there. He was 31.

Payne’s death occurred at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood, according to a statement from police provided to CNN.

The musician was best known as a member of the famed British boyband One Direction. The band, which also included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, first formed in 2010 after each member appeared on the UK version of reality competition show “The X Factor.”

One Direction announced they were taking a hiatus in 2015. Payne later released his debut solo album in 2019 titled “LP1.” In March, Payne released his LP “Teardrops.”

Payne had a son, born in 2017, who he shared with former Girls Aloud singing group member Cheryl Cole.

Upon arrival, officers heard a thud and discovered Payne’s body in the courtyard.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the emergency medical team, shared that an autopsy is being conducted to investigate the circumstances. Argentine media reported Payne was in town to attend a concert by his former bandmate, Niall Horan.

Payne was part of the global phenomenon One Direction, formed in 2010 on The X Factor. Known for hits like “What Makes You Beautiful,” the band dominated the charts before splitting in 2016. Fans, famously called "Directioners," have since remained loyal.

Payne leaves behind his son, Bear, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Cheryl, as well as his parents, Geoff and Karen, and sisters, Ruth and Nicola. Payne’s representatives have not yet responded for comment.

He made some good music. He’s a talented musician. This is a very ugly incident. Falling from the balcony is not a good one at all. Is he under some kind of influence? Or is he depressed? You never can trust the musicians with the alcohol and drugs.

His passing is sad news to the entire music industry. No matter what we will keep dancing to "Story of My Life" and "Drag Me Down.". The cause of his death should be investigated because I don't see it as a natural death.

I was never a fan of One Direction, but man it's sad to see what fame can do to a person. I seen pictures of his hotel room and man he really messed it up before falling off the balcony. He did take a bunch of drugs, so it was either a suicide or just a really bad trip. Either way this is tragic, RIP Liam.
