David Fincher is set to expand the Squid Game universe with a new English-language series for Netflix. Sources reveal that while Fincher could work on another film first, this Squid Game project will likely become his main focus in 2025.

This marks the first scripted spin-off for Squid Game, adding to the original Korean series, the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, and a developing video game franchise. Fincher’s new series would bring the thriller's brutal themes to a U.S. setting, potentially tapping into his signature dark storytelling, similar to his 1997 film The Game.

Details are scarce, but Dennis Kelly (Utopia) is expected to write the series. Fincher, who has a longstanding relationship with Netflix through projects like House of Cards, Mindhunter, and Love, Death & Robots, has been exploring potential Squid Game ideas for some time. Initially linked to an English-language film, the focus has shifted to a series.

Netflix is aiming to capitalize on the success of the original Squid Game, which debuted in 2021 and won six Primetime Emmys. With Season 2 premiering on December 26 and a third and final season already confirmed, Fincher’s adaptation could be the next big step for the franchise.

Netflix has not yet commented on the news.

David Fincher is great, but will he be able to improve the story in a meaningful way, or is this a blatant cash grab for Netflix?

I have not watched Squid Game, but know how popular it has been amongst the viewers and what a crazy fan following it has. My elder daughter enjoyed it and she feels that though the season 2 got better rating and view, the first season was better. It's English version is coming up and that's building up a lot of expectations and anticipations. Once something is a hit and sells well, we expect more remakes and spin offs. I have read somewhere that very soon Netflix might come up with an Indian version and a Spanish version.
