discuss Can we learn to control our thoughts and emotions?

This thread focuses on relationships, including communication, dynamics, challenges, advice, and their impact on personal growth and connections.
Though under-explored, meditation is a powerful mental tool that does a lot of good to the brain. When practiced in the right way, meditation offers a mental calm that re-tunes body hormones, and eventually affects as a remedy for many physical illnesses too. The thought processes can be tamed too through meditation and the mind becomes re-wired, rejuvenated and more focused into positive thoughts.

One thing I've learnt over time is that for you to build a good mental health you need to be in charge of your thoughts. As a psychologist, I always advice that you extend the vocabulary in your mind. You need to step into the state of your mind and ask yourself what is the right word for your mood at the moment, is it "happy" or "sad" or is it "anger" or joy"? Having goten the conviction you need then you choose to remain in that horizon or come out of that mood. That way, you get to take charge of what's going through your mind and how you react to things around you.

I don't think you can actually control your thoughts or emotions. In fact these are beyond your control. However, I do believe you can try channelizing your thoughts and emotions in a positive way. For instance, if you have distressing thoughts you can meditate and try to get away from those thoughts. Or, if you experience anger, you channelize your anger into something useful.

Thoughts and emotions often feel automatic and uncontrollable. But like you said, we can redirect their energy positively. I’ve used meditation and creative outlets to calm distress or turn anger into motivation, which really helps.
