It's widespread in US culture, though it's viewed as weak. Well, in other cultures, like the Philippines or Italy, it's not considered weak.

Of course, I'm referring to living in the parent's basement (or other room), not renting basements from strangers.

The stigma around living in the basement is real and I think it’s basically for financial reasons but some may view it as a lack of independence which is also true.
