Amazon Prime sent me an email today morning. The summary of the contents are:

1. Amazon Prime needs more capital to ensure a free flow of good content across the Prime platform
2. For this, they are introducing advertisements to users who are already subscribed to Amazon Prime
3. For removing the advertisements, subscribers will have to pay additional amount (approximately 40% of the subscription fee) to remove these ads.
4. It will begin by June 2025.

What are your thoughts?

This is understandable because we all know that they need to generate revenue and invest in more content and if any user wants an ads free option, they can pay an extra fee for it.
I am not sure if its understandable because already Amazon Prime charges higher than oth OTT and the amount is not commensurate with either the content or the application interface.

If I used Amazon Prime for TV, I'd be outraged LOL

I use it for free shipping. If they take that away, I'll quit subscribing.

Its like trying to create a link between one service and the other forcing people to ssubscribe, most often at a inflated price.

It also comes with Prime guarantee on products too.

What do you think?

This sounds ridiculously unfair to me, people subscribed to Amazon Prime to avoid ads, and now if they too have to face the same dilemma then what is the point of availing their services? I am glad I never subscribed to Prime, though I had often considered doing so.
I totally agree with this.

In the email that was sent to the subscribers, if I read between the lines, I think they are signalling that the ads will be 'significantly' shorter than what other subscribers and platforms offer.

Netflix is the best!

Netflix also have ads now too. The Standard with Ads plan now costs $7.99/month in the US as of January 2025. This plan comes with 4-5 minutes of ads per hour that's shown before and during select shows and movies.

I have Amazon Prime for the shipping on Amazon and also for Amazon Music but it's not too often that I watch anything on Amazon Prime. I will admit, for how much they charge already, I am shocked that they will be introducing ads and charging more if you want ads. They already charge enough I feel.
